Movie Parental Guide

nudity There is a scene where the father bathes with his children. None of the genitals are seen, but there is a glimpse of the buttocks, and a small dot which may be representing a nipple can be seen at one point (although it may seem a bit odd to westerners, family baths are a social norm in the Far East).
violence The main characters' mother is sick in the hospital. Satsuki then starts to get bad feelings that her mom is dead, but she isn't.
profanity None
alcohol None
frightening The scene where Mei runs away and Satsuki tries to find her in desperation may be a bit unsettling. There's a momentary scare when an abandoned sandal is found but Satsuki concludes it is definitely not Mei's. Totoro can be frightening for young and sensitive viewers. But he's really a good guy, especially in the climax where he is delighted to be of assistance to find Mei when she is lost. Their new house has tiny little "soot sprites" that crawl around and creep out the girls at first. In the scene in the bath, the wind starts moving the house and they hear some creepy noises. Later, the father starts laughing and the girls start laughing too. MPAA/USA - Rated G. BBFC/UK - Rated U (infrequent mild threat).
