Against medical advice and without the knowledge of her husband Pat Solatano Sr., caring Dolores Solatano discharges her adult son, Pat Solatano Jr., from a Maryland mental health institution after his minimum eight month court ordered stint. The condition of the release includes Pat Jr. moving back in with his parents in their Philadelphia home. Although Pat Jr.'s institutionalization was due to him beating up the lover of his wife Nikki, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Nikki has since left him and has received a restraining order against him. Although he is on medication (which he doesn't take because of the way it makes him feel) and has mandatory therapy sessions, Pat Jr. feels like he can manage on the outside solely by healthy living and looking for the "silver linings" in his life. His goals are to get his old job back as a substitute teacher, but more importantly reunite with Nikki. He finds there are certain instances where he doesn't cope well, however no less so ...

Dancers at a competition wear tight and extremely revealing outfits, one of them just barely covering a woman's breasts.
violence A man nearly beats another man to death. We're told, and in flashback we see snippets of the attack: kicks and punches and blood. At one point it looks like the man is being choked. Nearly unhinged, he rips his house apart, looking for his old wedding tape. He accidentally strikes his mother and gets into a fistfight with his dad. The next morning both have bruises on their faces. When a man and a woman get into a verbal fight, the woman screams that the man assaulted her, a lie that attracts the attention of some would-be defenders and a police officer. A few fans get into a scrum with the miscreants prior to a game. A man throws a book out through a closed window. A woman slaps a man.

alcohol Pat at first refuses to take his medication, but after the fight with his dad, rethinks and is seen taking them once. At the end of the movie, he tells Nikki that he is still on medication. He and Tiffany jokingly discuss the effects of different psychiatric medications, such as Lithium, Abilify, Xanax and Clonazepam, among others. Tiffany downs two vodkas, and is also seen taking several swigs from a beer bottle. Danny says he was put in the mental institution for crystal meth and alcohol abuse.
frightening Pat's outbursts can be upsetting. The flashback scene with the beating is edited over his first breakdown with chaotic rock music. This may upset some viewers. During Pat's first breakdown he accidentally knocks down his mother, so his father starts violently hitting him. The scene is very intense.
