Thomas A. Anderson is a man living two lives. By day he is an average computer programmer and by night a hacker known as Neo. Neo has always questioned his reality, but the truth is far beyond his imagination. Neo finds himself targeted by the police when he is contacted by Morpheus, a legendary computer hacker branded a terrorist by the government. Morpheus awakens Neo to the real world, a ravaged wasteland where most of humanity have been captured by a race of machines that live off of the humans' body heat and electrochemical energy and who imprison their minds within an artificial reality known as the Matrix. As a rebel against the machines, Neo must return to the Matrix and confront the agents: super-powerful computer programs devoted to snuffing out Neo and the entire human rebellion.

nudity One man tells another that he can "hook him up" with a woman in a red dress. She walks by with her cleavage showing in a tight, low-cut dress. A man is seen naked when he is "awoken" from the Matrix, but his genitals are not shown at any point. At a scene in a nightclub, there is a brief close-up of a man stroking a woman's butt. A man sees a woman's photo in which she was lying on floor and wearing just a pantyhose and bikini. Camera zooms from her toes to face.
violence Lots of killings with machine guns, resulting in numerous bodies and little blood. Constant martial arts violence. There are gunshot wounds on the chests and on the backs of a few people, occasionally with blood spray; occasionally they are hit in the head, but this isn't very noticeable. One man gets zapped by a laser gun and we see his charred, bloody arm. There are numerous martial arts fights with lots of punching and hitting. A few more intense scenes have close-ups of people being punched with blood around their mouths. Some people get their heads and bodies slammed against walls. A man has a creature extracted from his navel, a little blood is shown. Trinity throws a knife into a man's forehead during an action scene, but we don't see any blood, nor do we clearly see the impact. An agent is shot at an extremely close range; we don't see the impact in detail but there is a brief red mist. A man gets shot in the chest at close range. We do not see the bullet hit, but we see his finger touch the wound and there is a good amount of blood on it. The same man then gets shot many times, and a bit of blood briefly sprays. He falls back against the wall, and as he slides down it a lot of blood smears behind him. A man is skimmed with bullets that cut him open for a brief second. Neo shoots many defenseless people at a security gate; one man is seen with blood all over his shirt. When people die in the matrix, their bodies in the real world cough up blood and die as well. A couple of people are killed with a laser gun, we don't see much detail. A woman breaks another man's arm (we hear a crunch and see the chop without much detail), she face-palms him and kicks him. She dodges bullets discharged by other cops, throws a chair at one of them, shoots another, then chops/kicks the final one to the ground. It is assumed all those cops die. She flees from more cops, jumping off rooftops and crashing through windows, and runs to a pay phone in order to get out of the situation. A garbage truck plows down the phone booth but she lives . There is a slow-motion close-up of Morpheus being shot in the leg with a bit of blood spray. A group of police officers viciously beat Morpheus with batons, and he is seen covered in dust and has blood on his face. Morpheus and Agent Smith fight briefly. Morpheus gets punched several times. Blood is seen around his mouth. An older teen gets shot multiple times by a military squad. We see the bullets hit him with little (if any) blood in the Matrix, but in the real world, we see him convulse, blood pours out of his mouth, and his heart monitor flat lines. A traitor kills two of his crew mates by unplugging their heads from a computer, where their minds are. The crew mates look worried, and then they collapse dead on the ground. No blood whatsoever, but is intense. A man tries to escape from the FBI by climbing out of a window and walking on a very narrow ledge. He freaks out when the wind picks up, he goes back inside, and gets arrested. We see the cops put him in a car. A man's mouth melts together, looking like stretched out putty until it is sealed shut. Several other men restrain him, however the first man wakes up in his bed with his mouth, as if it were a dream. A quicksilver substance climbs up a man's arm, through his body, and ultimately into his mouth. He gets panicky during the procedure, but is okay.
profanity Neo flips off the agents in the white holding room. "Shit" is said 32 times. 12 Uses of "damn" including "Goddamn" "Dammit" Etc. 9 uses of "hell" 2 uses of "crap" 5 uses of "ass" Strong language including F-words play in a song in the end credits.
alcohol Choi smokes a cigarette at the club, Dujour is seen with a drink. Cypher and Neo share a drink that is implied to be alcoholic based on Neo's aversive reaction. Cypher and Agent Smith have wine at dinner. Cypher also smokes a cigar. The Oracle smokes a cigarette. Neo is offered to take a red or blue pill. He took the red pill.
frightening In the beginning of the movie Neo gets arrested and is taken into an interrogation room where his mouth becomes sealed and then a robotic "bug" enters his body through his navel ,it is very disturbing and scary. Later this "bug" is extracted by a machine. This scene and where the "bug" is put into Neo. Some viewers may find the idea that humans are essentially enslaved and used as batteries to be unsettling. BBFC - (15) Strong fantasy violence.
