Centuries ago, the evil Emperor Han was cursed by the sorceress Zi Yuan who transformed him and his army into mummies. In 1946, the explorer Rick O'Connell and his wife Evelyn O'Connell are invited by the British government to take a relic, the diamond "The Eye of Shangri-La" to China. The ancient stone is capable of resurrecting the Emperor Han and of pointing the way to Shangri-La and the eternal pool of life. When the couple reaches China, they meet their son Alex O'Connell, who has discovered the tomb of Han, and Evelyn's brother Jonathan Carnahan. The O'Connells are betrayed by their friend Prof. Roger Wilson, who is associated with General Yang. Yang wants to serve Emperor Han, so he resurrects the mummy and they head for Shangri-La. The guardian of Han's tomb (and Zi's daughter) Lin tells them that the only ways to destroy Han is to prevent him from reaching Shangri-La or by stabbing his heart with a cursed dagger.
|nudity||A man and woman are shown engaging in sex for a very brief moment. Some dancing girls in bar wear some revealing outfits. Characters kiss in some scenes and characters make some suggestive (inexplicit) remarks.|
|violence||Contains very frequent violence. While very little blood is depicted, even where characters would ordinarily be severely injured, the violence itself is very frequent. Modes of attack and death include shootings, stabbings, beheadings and crushings. A man is stretched apart by four horses (the actual stretching is implied off-screen and no decapitation is depicted). But in a deleted scene, the stretching is implied on-screen. A man and a woman gets crushed between two giant gears. A man gets decapitated by the Dragon Emperor's red-hot hand.(his decapitated head can be seen very briefly flying in the air). There is also the decapitation of a mummified horse, however its insides appear to be slimy. Several stabbings occur throughout the movie (with only one particularly graphic instance). At the beginning of the movie, a man throws a fishing rod only for the hook to grab his face. The scene is intended to be humorous. A man's face is shown graphically melting off. Two people are crushed by gears.|
