Movie Parental Guide

nudity Suggested MPAA rating: PG for sequences of violent images 2/10 A group of men bathe in a river in an attempt to get dates with women. They do somersaults in the water and their buttocks are very briefly visible. One character sleeps with a French woman. Nothing is shown, but we hear them talking from the bedroom. It is strongly implied that they have had sex.
violence 8/10 The battle scenes are intense, even by today's standards. Near 30 minutes into the film it's nighttime, soldiers are fighting. A bomb explodes near a soldier's face; he then becomes blind. You can see blood on his eyes, he then screams in agony and pain which makes the scene emotional. He is then shot and killed by enemy gunfire. A brief glimpse of soldiers being blown up in a hole Two characters lose legs. One of them dies later on. There is a short but disturbing glimpse of a soldier grabbing onto a wire. He is then blown up, and all that is left is his hands still grabbing on the wire. Blood is shown. A pretty iconic scene where the French soldiers are coming to German trenches and a German soldier shoots the French with a machine gun. We pan across the French being shot down and all of them dying. The same thing happens when the Germans go to the French trenches. A famous scene where Paul Baumer is in a deep hole during a battle, a French soldier jumps into the hole and Paul stabs him. Feeling sorry, Paul tries to save his life but fails. He is in sorrow and pleads for forgiveness. The famous ending to the film where Paul is in the trenches; he then spots a butterfly. He reaches out to grab it, but a French sniper sees him. Just as he is about to grab the butterfly, a shot rings out. Paul's hand falls, and it just lays motionless, indicating that he is dead.
profanity 2/10 Language is used, but is obstructed by noise or by the characters not finishing their words/sentences. For instance a character says: "Son of a..." but his voice trails off before any actual language is used. Religious expletive are kept to a few uses of "Oh my god."
alcohol 1/10 Occasional drinking, but frequent smoking.
frightening 5/10 Being about war, this film is intense.
