History comes gloriously to life in Disney's epic animated tale about love and adventure in the New World. Pocahontas is a Native American woman whose father has arranged for her to marry her village's best warrior. But a vision tells her change is coming, and soon she comes face to face with it in the form of Capt. John Smith.

Movie Parental Guide

nudity 1/10 Pocahontas and John Smith share passionate kisses twice in the film. G A lot of Native American men are shirtless, and some of the women wear midriff-style outfits, showing abdomens and bare arms. Nothing less than what a bathing suit will cover. G/PG
violence 5/10 There is gunplay and arrows are fired between settlers and natives. PG A Powhatan Indian is shot in the leg and wounded. PG Kokoum is shot at and killed. No blood is shown. PG Chief Powhatan nearly executes John Smith with a large club. PG John Smith is shot by Ratcliffe, but only to protect Chief Powhatan from the bullet. Again, no blood is shown. PG Ratcliffe tells Thomas to "learn to use that thing [a gun] properly. A man's not a man unless he knows how to shoot." G Ratcliffe calls the Powhatans "murderous thieves" and says "anyone who so much as looks at an Indian without killing him on site will be tried for treason and hanged." PG Some of the men talk sport of "killing the savages" and not wanting to miss the fun. G/PG Some comical misadventures between Meeko and Percy. G
profanity 2/10 Ratcliffe says that the Indians' skin is "hellish red." G/PG Name calling: "ninnies; big oaf; half wit; bunch of idiots" G
alcohol Pocahontas offers John Smith an herbal pain medication. He's not shown taking it. G
frightening 4/10 In the middle of the ocean and during a storm, a man is swept overboard. When others want to save him, the captain commands "No, he's lost". (The hero dives into the water anyway, and has a harrowing time getting the man back to ship; this includes a period of both being deep underwater, looking up at the bottom of the ship, which a young child could mistake for drowning.) Pocahontas' betrothed husband is shot at and killed. The sequence where both sides are marching toward war can be intense for younger children. The ending is very sad. Total: 12/50 Suggested MPAA rating: PG for some violence.
